In late January 2019, the Phillip Morris-funded Foundation for a Smoke-Free World pressured the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO EB) to depart from its long-standing policy of not working with the tobacco industry. STOP mobilized more than 300 organizations and individuals in 54 countries to sign an open letter urging the WHO EB to reject the approach and reaffirm a previous statement that it would not collaborate with Foundation for a Smoke-Free World.
STOP prepared a statement that was delivered at the WHO EB meeting in Geneva by the World Heart Federation. The statement reflected broader concern about tobacco industry interference expressed by member states and others at this session.
