Anti-Tobacco Trade Litigation Fund

July 01, 2019

This resource underwritten by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is set up to help countries fight back against tobacco industry lawsuits brought under international trade and investment agreements, often with the intent of discouraging countries from enacting or implementing life-saving tobacco control laws.

Countries that have successfully fought the industry with the help of this fund include Australia and Uruguay, and dozens more countries have been threatened with such action by tobacco companies or their representatives.

The fund supports low- and middle-income countries that have been sued by tobacco companies under international trade agreements. Managed by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the fund provides financial and technical assistance to governments committed to defending their laws to reduce tobacco use.
