Foundation For A Smoke-Free World Tax Return Suggests Little Has Changed But Its Name
June 20, 2024
The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (FSFW), funded entirely by Philip Morris International (PMI), is now Global Action to End Smoking (GAES). But the change appears to go no further than its name.
GAES’ rhetoric and priorities still reflect tobacco industry interests. Although there is insufficient evidence to suggest e-cigarettes are effective cessation tools, GAES promotes these industry-backed products as “harm reduction.” It also opposes legislation that would protect youth from access to e-cigarettes by claiming that it would limit options for adults who are trying to quit smoking.
Make no mistake: GAES is still fully funded by PMI. Despite its new name, anyone interested in acting to end smoking should avoid engaging with GAES.
