As public understanding of the detrimental health effects of tobacco use became clear in the mid-1900s, so too did public support for tobacco regulation and high excise taxes. Higher tobacco taxes serve a dual purpose: They are a significant and stable revenue source for governments and effectively discourage tobacco use.
To help offset the public health costs caused by tobacco use, STOP urges governments to implement higher excise taxes on tobacco products. This document by the International Monetary Fund provides a framework for how this can be accomplished.
