In 2020, Philip Morris International (PMI) announced an ‘aspirational’ target for reduced cigarette shipments by 2025. Researchers noted that this ‘goal’ aligned with declining cigarette sales and existing shipment trends.
Since 2020, global cigarette sales stopped declining, and so did PMI’s shipments. Current 2025 shipment projections indicate that PMI will not reach its stated target, suggesting that transformation was not its true motivation.
