Links Between Smoking and COVID-19

Two non-peer-reviewed studies recently argued that nicotine protects tobacco users from COVID-19 and can be used as a new coronavirus treatment option. However, the best currently available evidence paints a different picture:

  1.  Current evidence on smoking and coronavirus suggests smokers are at greater risk of poor outcomes
  2. Evidence suggests that active and former smokers may have increased risk of infection
  3. Smoking is highly damaging to overall health
