True Stories of People Challenging Big Tobacco

Akinbode Oluwafemi, executive director of Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa

Threats. Bribery. Lies. Outright violence. Tobacco control advocates have seen it all. Yet they still find the courage to take on an industry that targets children and others with addictive, deadly products.

In STOP’s new series, “Lives at Stake: True Stories of People Challenging Big Tobacco,” hear from those at the forefront of the fight against Big Tobacco. First up is Akinbode Oluwafemi, an activist whose organization has fought for years to strengthen tobacco laws in Nigeria and throughout Africa. For him, “There is no Plan B to saving the lives of our people.”

Oluwafemi details his many experiences with the tobacco industry and what keeps him motivated despite efforts to silence him.

This video series is an extension of the Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index, a tool that guides policymakers on how to prevent industry meddling. Explore the Index for more information on how the industry attempts to weaken and obstruct tobacco control policies across the world.
