Investigating tobacco presence at retail points of sale around schools in Egypt
How Big Tobacco Targets Kids Near Schools Across the Eastern Mediterranean
Something alarming is happening near many schools in Egypt, Jordan and Pakistan. Tobacco products are being marketed and sold just minutes away from where kids go to learn. New research shows how Big Tobacco targets areas around schools, turning children’s daily walk to class into an opportunity to hook the next generation.
Walking to school, kids might pass colorful banners advertising cigarettes hanging outside of a store. Inside, they might find flavored e-cigarettes sitting next to candy or pens. And when placed at their eye-level, children might be able to reach tobacco and nicotine products without any help.
When exposure to such marketing becomes part of a child’s daily routine, addictive and harmful products become normalized. Many children eventually will try a tobacco product and get hooked.
But this is not normal.
